Kona Jazz Experience slated Dec. 29
The second annual Kona Jazz Experience begins at 7 p.m. Dec. 29 at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. Proceeds will benefit the Aloha Performing Arts Company. This year’s event features Bill Noble’s Big Island Big Band playing compositions by Duke Ellington, Count Basie and other composers and arrangers of the Big Band era. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults. The concert is sponsored by Aloha Hills Coffee and underwritten by Innovations Hair Salon of Kailua-Kona and the Law Offices of Kenneth A. Ross.
Noble has performed with the Temptations, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Fifth Dimension, many local artists and his own Bill Noble Trio.
“This concert is all about love.” said Noble.
According to producer Dale Ross, “Jazz lovers have just a few places to hear live music in Kona. The historic Aloha Theatre is a wonderful, intimate venue to play and listen to jazz. Audience and musicians alike can look forward to hearing and appreciating every note.”

Woodward’s work recognized by
science fiction group
Waimea resident Greer Woodward’s poem “Closure” was among the winners of the Science Fiction Poetry Association’s 2012 Dwarf Stars award. Her poem placed second in the competition recognizing the best speculative short poems published in 2011. Marge Simon’s “Blue Hat Buddha” won first place, and G.O. Clark’s “Snowflake Galaxies” took third.
“Closure” was first published in the autumn 2011 issue of Illumen magazine. It was also nominated for the association’s 2012 Rhysling Award in the short poem category.
Woodward is a member of the Writer’s Support Group at Tutu’s House. Her poetry has appeared in Star*Line, Silver Blade, Beyond Centauri and Joyful. She’s a graduate of the Clarion West, a workshop for writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror.

‘Aida’ broadcast set for Saturday at Makalapua
Hollywood Theaters and the Hoku Concert Series present “Aida,” Giuseppe Verdi’s dramatic opera about an ancient Egyptian love triangle. The live high-definition broadcast begins at 12:55 p.m. Saturday at Makalapua Cinemas with an encore showing set at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 16.
